Q1 What is it called Bluetooth? |
|
| Answer |
|
It was named after Harald Bluetooth who was famous for Viking, who unified Denmark and Norway that are in the Scandinavia Peninsula in the 10th century. As Harald Bluetooth unified the Scandinavia Peninsula, it means that Bluetooth technology will complete unified connection devices which have no wire(streamlessly) between many kinds of communicational devices. In addition, as Harald Blutooth was also famous for a traveler, it means to hope that compatible Bluetooth technology will unify all communicational environment to make it possible to communicate using a single device wherever you travel through all over the world.

Q2 What is Bluetooth's origin? |
|
| Answer |

Wireless(radio) interface has been researched since 1994, which is cheap and has small power consumption between Ericsson Mobile Communication's cellular phones and peripheral devices. After starting to contact with other portable devices making companies in the beginning of 1997, finally Bluetooth SIG(Special Interest Group), which was composed of Ericsson, Nokia, IBM, Toshiba, and Intel in Feb. 1998, was made a start. Bluetooth SIG added 4 companies of Motorola, Microsoft, Lucent technology, and 3COM, therefore, 9 companies are now taking part in Bluetooth SIG, and membership companies have already reached around 1,400 companies. Bluetooth SIG which is firm has been established as world standards displaying its grand appearance because it is expected to increase continually.
Bluetooth was just the name of project which was being progressed in the beginning. It was determined to become an official name by SIG because it was easy to remember and aroused interest.
Bluetooth was developed to support connection devices within the space of 'In Room(an office/a meeting room/home) and 'Personal(an user's circumstance) in terms of reaching distance.

Q3 Why does Bluetooth attract attention? |
|
| Answer |
|
If you think about what the information and communication industry has developed for, you can see it. Purpose is freedom, safety, multifunction, convenience, and confidence. If added one more thing to the purpose, that is to design to be the most suitable to the field of the internet industry which is the biggest industry in the 21th century. If someone can not travel free through the internet in the future, he or she will seems to live alone in a desert island.
Let us give an example about a story of using the internet of an user who has a portable PC. It is possible that anyone has access to internet anytime using a portable PC if there is an any external way such as wireline network(POPS, ISDN, xDSL), wireline LAN(10BaseT, 100BaseT, Wireline), radio network(Cellular, PCS, Paging, Satellite), wireless LAN(802.11, SWAP), etc within around 10m/100m. Of course, it is also possible that someone e-mails others, and applies it as a communicational medium which is needs a preservative function such as electronic commerce because Bluetooth has a self-preservative function(Key operation, Authentication, Encryption, etc.)
In case of using a cellular phone, if there is only a wireless phone which is used by putting in the ear(Handset), you can make a call anytime wherever a phone is, and you can use one phone using a wireless internet phone without paying call cost both in an office and at home. You can use even a general phone(PSTN) and a portable phone(Cellular, PCS), therefore, you can get an effect to use 3 kinds of phones by using only one phone. The field of practice is vast and endless, and many ideas which we can little imagine until now have realized by appearance of Bluethooth.
Bluetooth provides general interface(UART, USB, PCM, PCMCIA, etc.), and connects with ISM Open band, and is cheap, small, low power consumption. In result, it is no wonder that Bluetooth attracts interest from all developers of the field of electronics.

Q4 What is Bluetooth SIG? |
|
| Answer |
|
Bluetooth Special Interest Group(SIG) is consortium between companies of the field of communication and the computer industry which will lead Bluetooth development. Bluetooth SIG was established to make an international standard of short distance wireless communication in 1998 by 5 companies of Ericsson, Intel, IBM, Nokia, and Toshiba. This consortium linked each core ability which is for developing as one standard of Bluetooth technology.
Any organization which is interested in applying this technology can join by signing a Bluetooth adopter agreement. A membership company of the organization(adopter or a non-founding SIG membership company) is qualified to develop products which are based on Bluetooth technology, so can have a license without paying royalties.
Bluetooth will be applied first to the field of circumstantial devices such as a cellular phone, a portable computer, an electronic note book, Handset, network access point, etc. It is expected to be had built-in or set up to 100millions of cellular phones by 2002, and used to many kinds of electronic devices such as over millions of portable computers, portable devices.
